Introduction

The cost to attend college is expensive.  It is estimated that college costs are increasing at twice the rate of inflation. Although this alarming fact to be aware of, it is not a reason to be discourage. There are vast monies available to help students finance college from a variety of sources. Receiving these monies is not difficult when you go about it the right way. Most scholarship and grant applications ask you to provide your grade point-average, complete an essay, list your extracurricular activities, and obtain letters of recommendation.

Scholarship Scams

Weeding through the numerous types of scholarship offers can be overwhelming, leading some parents and students to seek help from scholarship services. The Better Business Bureau warns consumer to be careful. Despite their elaborate claims and professional images, many are scams. The Better Business Bureau says consumer complaints against scholarship, loan, and grant services jumped 60 percent last year. Listed below are scholarships that high school seniors and current college students can apply for.  Some of the scholarships are based on grade-point averages, income or ethnicity.

Scholarship List

1) The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now-to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. MS shouldn't stand in the way of an education. This is why the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Scholarship Program exist. Scholarship applications for 2009 awards will be available October 1, 2008. Applications may be submitted from October 15, 2008 through January 15, 2009 and scholars receive notice in May, 2009. 2) The National Hydropower Association Past Presidents' Legacy Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Hydropower Association, is open to undergraduate juniors or seniors or graduate students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent), who are enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate course of study at an accredited vocational-technical school or program.  Applications must be United States citizens or legal residents. Applicants must be pursuing a program of study, approved by the National Hydropower Association that is related to the hydropower industry. Guidelines and application forms will be available December 2008 at www.Hydro.org Postmark deadline to submit application is March 1, 2009.

3) Junior Achievement Worldwide is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.  Scholarships are a unique way for Junior Achievement Worldwide to say, "We believe in your students." 5) The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education.  Founded in 1975 as a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization, HSF's vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans.  In support of its mission to double the rate of Hispanics earning college degrees, HSF provides the Latino community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country.  For more information, please visit www.hsf.net

6) The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the nation's largest, oldest, and most successful minority higher education assistance organization.  Since 1985, the UNCF Scholarships and Grants Administration office has awarded in scholarship assistance over $105 million to over 28,000 students enrolled in its 39 member colleges and universities and other HBCUs and majority institutions as well.

The United Negro College Fund has partnerships with fortune 500 companies that provide scholarships and internship opportunities to students who attend HBCUs. Some companies pay interns between $25.00 to $27.00 dollars an hour, and award students a $10,000 scholarship upon successful completion of the internship. For more information, please visit www.uncf.org

7) The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's educational program is a significant part of the Show's mission - benefiting youth, supporting education, and facilitating better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentations. 8) Covenant Community Capital Corporation (Covenant), founded in 1998, is a nonprofit organization in Houston, Texas, that seeks to enhance the beauty, safety, and economic vitality of low-income communities by increasing their capacity to develop affordable housing, grow business enterprises, and build family and community assets.

Covenant Smart-Saving Program is a special matched-savings account program designed to help low-to-moderate-income families and individuals in Houston to establish a pattern of regular savings and ultimately, purchase a "productive asset".

Smart-Savings participants may use their savings and match money towards any of the three productive assets: a home, small business, or a post-secondary education. Participants' deposits are held at Compass Bank and Wells Fargo Bank and are matched using both private and public sources (The United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, the McAuley Institute, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and City of Houston). 9) The Houston Endowment is a private philanthropic foundation that improves life for the people of the greater Houston area through its contributions to charitable organizations and educational institutions. 10) Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is the only national organization to provide merit scholarships, programmatic and capacity building support to 47 public HBCUs. Since their inception, TMCF has provided more than $68 million in scholarships and programmatic support to students: Scholarships are only awarded per semester based on available funding. Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholarships are not awarded directly to students. Scholarships are awarded to the student via the member college or university to which the student has been accepted. 12) The Barbara Jordan Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the late Barbara Jordan, a Texas congresswoman and distinguished educator. Up to six $1,500 scholarships will be awarded each year to outstanding junior, senior and graduate students enrolled in educator preparation programs at predominantly ethnic-minority institutions. 13) Ron Brown was the first African-American appointed to the Cabinet post Secretary of Commerce and the first to serve as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. At the time of his death in 1996, he was a figure of global prominence, respected for his intelligence, political savvy and leadership.

The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. 14) While many United States Presidents are immortalized in structures of bricks and mortar or marble, the memory of our 33rd President continues in a living memorial: the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.

The mission of the Truman Scholarship Foundation is:

  • to find and recognize college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service; and

    15) The American Library Association (ALA) is committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession. To demonstrate this commitment, the ALA and its units provide more than $300, 000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit.     17) The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) is a public, non-for-profit national organization founded by Rachel Robinson in 1973 as a vehicle to perpetuate the memory of Jackie Robinson and his achievements. Serving as an advocate for young people with the greatest need, the Foundation assists increasing numbers of minority youths through the granting of four-year scholarships for higher education.     18) Texas Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (TXNAHRO) is a professional membership organization consisting of agencies, and individuals who administer housing and community development in the state of Texas. NAHRO is the leading housing and community development in the state of Texas. NAHRO is the leading housing and community development advocates for provision of adequate and affordable housing and strong, viable communities for all Americans, particularity those with low and moderate incomes.

    19) The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) with more than 24,000 members is one of the largest student-managed organizations in the country.     20) A non-profit organization, IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. The IEEE name was originally an acronym for the institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Today, the organization's scope of interest has expanded into so many related fields, that it is simply referred to by the letters I-E-E-E (pronounced Eye-triple-E).     21) The College Board is a non-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the association is composed of more than 5,400 schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations.     22) Since the 1980's, The George Foundation has been committed to helping Fort Bend County students pursue degrees of higher education. The Foundation has ongoing endowed scholarships for Fort Bend County students attending the Texas colleges and universities listed below.     23) The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) was established in 1976 as a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy, research and educational institute. Their mission is to serve as the non-partisan policy-oriented catalyst that educates future leaders and promotes collaboration among legislators, business leaders, minority-focused organizational leaders, and organized labor to effect positive and sustainable change in the African American community.     24) The CBC Spouses Educational Scholarship is a national program that awards scholarships to academically talented and highly motivated students who intend to pursue full-time undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees. The Educational Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 and has experienced substantial growth. The fund is operated through the district offices of the members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).     25) E-scholar is the "Umbrella Term" that encompasses Jobs, Internships, Scholarships Fellowships, Grants, Apprenticeships and Cooperative Education within the Federal Government linking to the educational opportunities available to students high school through doctorate level and career professionals.     26) The Emergency Nurses Association Foundation (ENAF) scholarship program was established in 1991 by the Emergency Nurses Association. The mission of the foundation is to enhance emergency healthcare services to the public through the promotion and support of research and education in emergency care.     27) Epworth United Methodist Church offers several scholarships for their full-time college students or college-bound high school seniors, as well as students attending or planning to enter vocational schools. Applicants may apply for one or more of three scholarships currently available.     28) The George Bush High School Public Service Scholarship recognizes high school seniors in the Bryan-College Station school districts for their community service. The awards recognize the career of Presidents George Bush and his dedication to public service, which he has described as a noble calling.     30) The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.     31) With help from the Christian Missionary Scholarship Foundation, missionary kids whose parents have made financial sacrifices to serve the Lord all over the world are able to attend a Christian college education. The CMSF Board meets annually and grants scholarships to as many as 100 students at Calvin College, Dordt College, Hope College, Kuyper College, Trinity Christian College and Wheaton College.     32) As the national governing body of the sport of bowling, United States Bowling Congress is dedicate to providing programs and services to uphold the game's credibility preserve its future and enhance the bowling experience.     33) The David Letterman Scholarship was established by David Letterman in 1985 to provide scholarships for telecommunications students at Ball State University. The awards are intended for average students who nevertheless have a creative mind. Winners selected primarily based on creativity. Projects may involve a variety of media, including written work, research, audio, video, graphics and film.     34) The BRICK Awards by Do Something provides a $5,000 scholarship and a $5,000 grant to "change-makers" age 18 and under who work with Do something to improve their communities.     35) The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide. Founded by 44 men and women on December 12, 1975, in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation.

    Annually, NABJ awards more than $60,000 in scholarships to deserving students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships are worth up to $25,000. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born student, currently attending or entering an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.     36) Little People of America (LPA) is a nonprofit organization that provides support and information to people of short stature and their families. As part of their service to people with dwarfism and the community at large, LPA offers educational scholarships to prospective and current students attending college or vocational school in the United States. Awards can range from $250 to $1,000 (sometimes more). A scholarship committee, headed by LPA's Vice President of Programs, will selectively review all scholarship application packets.     37) The Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship awards one $5,000 and three $1,000 scholarships to skateboarders who are high school seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.     38) The Voice of Democracy Essay Contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW). The audio essay contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12.     40) The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Scholarship Fund was established in 1948 to provide educational assistance for children of military families. It is based on one of the Association's founding principals that "education is the cornerstone of a strong Democracy".     41) The Society Women Engineer Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science.     42) The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) is a non-for-profit, tax-exempt organization, created to fill a void in education funding.     43) The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation.     45) NASA supports the country's educators who play a key role in preparing the minds that will manage and lead the Nation's laboratories and research centers of tomorrow. NASA is currently developing the Science and Technology Scholarship Program.     46) The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes is awarded annually to ten US and Canadian students, aged 8-18, who have developed an extraordinary service project that helped people and the planet.     47) The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships are sponsored by the US Department of Defense and support graduate students pursuing a doctoral degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Biosciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences Computer, and Computational Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Geosciences, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Oceanography and Physics.     49) The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) is a new national organization devoted solely to the financial scholarship needs of Asian and Pacific Islander American students. For more information, please visit www.apiasf.org/

    50) Each year, the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) fellowship program provides $1,200,000 in fellowship to over 350 Native American and Alaska Native graduate students. Graduate fellowships are monetary awards made to American Indian and Alaska Native graduate or professional degree-seeking students, who meet all eligible criteria.     51) The UPromise Scholarship Program is open to UPromise members or children of UPromise members who are high school seniors or college undergraduates, and who will be enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school during the 2009-2010 school year. Applicants must be United States citizens or legal residents, have a family adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).     • Must be or have plans to be enrolled as a FULL-TIME student pursuing an undergraduate degree program
      at a four year U.S. accredited institution in the United States
    • Must apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at
